A Soldier’s Smile

A care package arrives… A box that carries hope, encouragement, and some much needed stuff.

By next week, we will reach the 100 mark for boxes sent out since 9/10/2010. At the moment, this is not an organization sending out items that have been collected and donated. This is a small family of Christians doing what is needed to help those who put their lives on the line…

A handful of people, spending their days off shopping, packing, sending…

There is a lot of time involved. My best friend put it mildly when she said last week, “We’re going to have to be doing this more than just Sundays.”

Rightly said. Sundays have become shopping days. I, Daughter Brown,  spend all week coupon-clipping and researching what deals are coming up at RiteAid.  At a minimum, 6 hours each week are spent sorting, cutting, and planning alone.  (If you listen closely, you can hear Father Brown muttering about lost sleep…)

What is the benefit?
My out-of-pocket expense is only 5% of the value of the item.

What does that mean?
I take $100 each week, and turn it into $2,000 of stuff!

Think about that.

So when the money for the postage comes, the boxes go out.  Seven boxes were sent out to Afghanistan and Iraq last week, thanks to our dear friends Brian and Reneé.  One of the boxes is pictured above with SFC Davis, my first picture of a care package received overseas.  I am happy to note that two-thirds of that particular box had to be snatched up by other soldiers in need, because any box I pack is stuffed so full that it is only the packing tape that keeps everything locked in place and secure for travel.  No wasted space.

Another three care packages are lined up for tomorrow.

APO boxes will be grabbed, and who knows how many boxes will be ready to go for next week? After all, there is over $3,000 worth of toiletries stacked in my room right now!

Floor… what floor?

God is good!
